Louisiana Purchase

The territory of Louisisana was an organized incorporated territory of the US that existed from July 4, 1805 until June 4, 1812, when it was renamed to Missouri Territory. It was made up of the part of the lands that were in the Louisiana Purchase. The louisiana Territory was named after Louis XIV(14), King of France from 1643 to 1715, it was named La Louisiane, meaning "Land of Louis"

On October 1, 1800 Spain ceded the Louisiana Territory to France in the Treaty of San Ildefonso. Napoleon Bonaparte invisioned a Carrabean empire, with the Louisiana Territory providing the Resources to support the center of the empire on the island of Santo Domingo (Now Haiti). Toussaint L'Ouverture: was the leader of the Haitian Revolution. Born in Saint-Domingue, Toussaint led slaves in a long struggle for independence over French colonizers, abolished slavery, and secured "native" control over the colony, Haiti.

Napoleon dispatched the French army to regian control of the island, but the when the islanders met the troops with fierce resistance. Faced with this resistance, and many troops suffering from yellow fever, the french retreated in defeat. Napoleon gave up on his plan for a Cribbean empire.

Jefferson, presedent at the time, sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to France with the intention of negotiating the purchase of the port of New Orleans, in an attempt to end, at long last, American difficulties there. He also instructed them to negotiate the purchase, if possible, of as much of Florida as possible. However, the envoy (a messenger or representative, especially one on a diplomatic mission) found Napoleon had given up on his plan for a Caribbean empire in order to focus on the war in Europe. In order to finance French efforts in Europe, he wanted to sell all of the Louisiana Territory. After some negotiation, the price was set at $15 million in April 1803, for which the US gained an enormous, uncharted piece of land to the west of the Mississippi River. For the price of approximately 13.5 cents per acre, the United States had doubled its size.

With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the United states purchased approximately 828 million square miles of territory from France, Thereby doubling the size of the young Republic. What was known as Louisiana Territory stretched from west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, strectching from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada.
